The Niederkirchner family - a contradictory legacy
Käte Niederkirchner (1909-1944) was considered an icon of anti-fascist resistance in the GDR. Company collectives, vacation homes, kindergartens and even a ship were named after her. Today she is commemorated by two streets in the districts of Mitte and Pankow as well as a memorial plaque inaugurated in 1989 on her former home at Pappelallee 22.
With the exhibition on the contradictory legacy of the Niederkirchners, the Museum Pankow sheds light on the complex history of the family and at the same time questions the heroic narrative of the past.
The exhibition takes a look at the interplay between family and social remembrance and repression along historical ruptures. It encourages us to look beyond the example of the Niederkirchner family and question traditions, instrumentalization and the creation of legends.Translated with DeepL
