What dishes were served at Prince Henry's table? Where did the food come from and who was involved in its preparation? With these questions, this year's cabinet exhibition focuses for the first time on one aspect of everyday life at a Prussian princely court.
Rheinsberg Palace was Henry's favorite place to stay. It was here that the prince and his court party as well as the numerous guests from home and abroad had to be catered for.
For nineteen years, Georg Conrad Singstock, among others, was responsible for this, serving the prince as cook and finally as chef. When he died in 1802, Singstock retired. He then decided to summarize his professional experience in a three-volume guide to the art of cooking, which was published in 1813. The book reveals a great deal about consumer behavior in the late 18th century in general and at Henry's court in particular.
Based on nine selected recipes from the cookbook, the exhibition looks at various aspects of the availability of ingredients, the animals and plants that were on the menu in Henry's time and the contribution that a kitchen garden could make to an economical court.Translated with DeepL
