In the special exhibition *Portraits!* , which opened on October 15, we encounter numerous works from the Gemäldegalerie in new contexts. In preparation for this presentation, the conservators carried out extensive work on the paintings from the museum’s own collection. In a discussion at the exhibition, Kerstin Krainer and Marie Becker will provide insights into the tasks and approaches involved in painting conservation.
The focus is on the painting *Portrait of a Dead Man* by Bartholomäus Bruyn the Younger, which, due to its condition, had previously been stored in the depot and was not on view to visitors. For the exhibition, it was thoroughly examined and extensively restored. Now, for the first time in about 130 years, it can be displayed again.
