Rename it?!

Histories of the Street Names in Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg

Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg is shaped by social movements, division and reunification, migration, squatting, post-colonial and colonial histories, and much more. Yet the names of the streets hardly reflect this diversity. The area of present-day Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg.

underwent an enormous surge in growth from 1871 onwards. The names of the newly created streets provided orientation, but by honouring figures from the military, culture and science, they also served to represent the German Empire and the emerging bourgeois class.

The exhibition “rename it?!” explores the history and present of street names in Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg and Berlin across two floors. On the 3rd floor, five thematic modules demonstrate how the naming of streets since the 19th century has contributed to the construction of a national identity in various forms. On the 2nd floor, the focus is on recent renamings, activism and debates surrounding street names in “WERKSTADT–Activism, Critique, and Actions regarding Street Names“ of Straßenlärm Berlin e.V.

The exhibition demonstrates that renaming streets is not a new phenomenon and is part of the city’s history. “rename it?!” is part of a joint exhibition series organised by Berlin’s twelve districts and the Aktives Museum Faschismus und Widerstand e.V.
