On 11 June, the Football World Cup kicks off in North America. Millions of people will be watching the stadiums, the goals, the big show. One day later, we are opening an exhibition about the opposite.
Kurt Mühlenhaupt painted what no camera seemed to find worth capturing: children in backyards, the old woman at the window, the market trader. People standing on the sidelines, quiet, dignified, completely at home in their own lives. Alongside this, the exhibition features images from Brandenburg: vastness, silence, the margins as landscape and as a place of longing.
‘Abseits’ brings both worlds together – the social margins and the geographical ones – and asks what can actually be seen when one looks away.
