With the death of Louis XIV in 1715, a new era dawned in France: the Régence. During the regency of Philip II of Orléans (1715–1723), court culture and ways of life underwent fundamental changes. Jean Antoine Watteau offered a distinctive artistic response to these changes with his *Fêtes galantes *. Martin Hanßen discusses Watteau’s new style of painting against this backdrop.
