Miriam Kongstad: Hard Play (2025)

Hard Play is a choreographic analysis of children’s games. In her work, Miriam Kongstad examines how, from an early age, we are trained to accept and reproduce (gender) identities and social norms. Conceived as a duet, the piece combines the performer’s physical movements with a live soundscape by musician Heva Vaupel. At the centre of the choreography is a 1.5-metre-long braid attached to the performer’s hair, which symbolically transforms into various objects commonly associated with children’s games, including a princess’s hair, a dog leash, a lasso, a skipping rope, and a whip.
Miriam Kongstad (* 1991, Denmark) is a choreographer and visual artist who lives and works in Berlin and Copenhagen. She trained as a choreographer at the Inter-University Centre for Dance Berlin (HZT) and completed an MFA in Fine Arts at the Sandberg Instituut in Amsterdam in 2020. Her practice revolves around physicality, identity, and social norms and takes shape in images, installations, performance, sculpture, and sound. Kongstad’s work has been presented at venues including the Centre Pompidou in Paris, Bergen Kunsthall, and the Gwangju Biennale.
