Kunst im Krankenhaus

In mid-May, Kunst im Westend e.V. invites you to six new exhibitions on the grounds of the DRK Kliniken Berlin Westend.

For the first time in over five years, all areas will be used simultaneously. Contemporary art and the listed Wilhelminian architecture of the hospital come together here in the middle of ongoing hospital operations - an extraordinary place that realigns the view of art and the public, art and health. This year's exhibitions show works by Katharina J. Kühne, Nadine Schemmann, Tatiana Urban, Ruohan Wang, Manfred Bartling and Tobias Hoffknecht in six independent presentations that can be discovered across the entire site.

In the Wiegmann Klinik, newcomer Katharina J. Kühne will be showing paintings, works on paper and sculptures on three floors and the roof garden, in which she explores nature as a shelter and mirror of inner states.

The historic Kochhaus serves the renowned textile artist Nadine Schemmann as a resonating space for a colorful installation about the cycles of life and the symbolism of cleaning. The old factory hall will be used as an exhibition venue for the first time.

Frankfurt painter Tatiana Urban presents vegetative scenes that combine with graphic abstract forms to create fragile, sometimes mystical visual worlds. Her exhibition can be seen at Station 24; if you take the stairs, you will find fantastic large-format works in the stairwell.

Luminous figures in absurd scenes lend the works of Chinese star artist Ruohan Wang a playful lightness that is at the same time underpinned by existential themes. For the DRK Kliniken Berlin Westend, a mural was created especially for the entrance area of the women's clinic, which will be unveiled at the art festival.

The Bremen painter and graphic artist Manfred Bartling called his pop-expressive drawings and paintings of household objects and foodstuffs such as eggs, breakfast rolls or gaudy vegetable still lifes Bartling Pop. With these works, mainly from the 1970s, he occupies a previously undiscovered niche in German Pop Art - on display in surgical wards 1b and 4b. An exhibition in cooperation with Haus Kunst Mitte.

Tobias Hoffknecht sees his works as projection surfaces - as mental spaces that invite quiet contemplation. In the spatial installation Hello Yellow, one encounters his sculpture Away like a mental sun lounger - an invitation to rest and reflection. The work was donated by Rosemarie Trockel, whose master student Tobias was, to the 'Figuren im Park - Stiftung von Heidi und Dieter Brusberg mit den DRK Kliniken Berlin Westend'.

Opening hours: You can visit the exhibitions at any time individually or as part of a guided tour. We kindly ask you to respect the peace and quiet of patients and the ongoing hospital operations.

Runtime: Sun, 18/05/2025 to Sun, 31/05/2026
