A garden does not thrive on bold statements and signs, but on attention and sustained care. In My Garden, Josh Johnson’s new solo performance, plays with forms of dispersal, distribution, and falling. As conventional dance forms dissolve, new creative impulses emerge within the flow of movement. Johnson develops the work in the spirit of the American writer Toni Morrison, who discerned the patterns of natural life cycles in historical developments. What disappears from the surface is therefore not entirely erased, but merely returns to the soil, from which new forms may soon emerge.

Josh Johnson is a dancer, performer, and choreographer from Los Angeles. He was a member of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre from 2009 and of the Forsythe Company from 2010 to 2015, and a guest member of Moved by the Motion at Schauspielhaus Zürich. As a co-founder of the SAD Collective, he has created performances, DJ sets, video works, and installations in Europe, the United States, and Asia. Johnson has collaborated with artists including Anne Imhof, Kandis Williams, Wu Tsang, and boychild.

PERFORM! is curated by Klaus Biesenbach, Director of the Neue Nationalgalerie, together with Lisa Botti, Curator at Neue Nationalgalerie, and Gregor Quack, Volkswagen Group Curator.
