Bjørn Melhus: Lost in Finity

The starting point is newly curated material drawn from Bjørn Melhus’s 35 years of artistic practice, which resonates with the present in an uncanny way: religious imagery meets pop-cultural visions of the apocalypse and technoid exit strategies.

For our concrete hall, we are creating an immersive installation that serves as a cinematic journey through the collective media subconscious of the 20th and 21st centuries—navigating the spectrum between human longings and fears, between apocalyptic scenarios and utopian visions.   The starting point is newly combined material from 35 years of artistic practice that resonates with the present in an uncanny way: religious imagery meets pop-cultural apocalyptic visions and technoid exit strategies. “Lost in Finity” opens up a space for reflection—both melancholic and tragicomic—on the multifaceted crisis of the present and poses the question of possible alternative visions and new utopias.

The End of Time in Infinity

While apocalyptic themes are currently back in vogue, we are experiencing, in a “business-as-usual” mindset, the denial of the possibility of an end. Two states that the philosopher Srečko Horvat describes in his book *Poetry from the Future* as “apocalyptic fetishism” and “fetishist denial.” The exhibition attempts to intertwine both perspectives. Central to the thematic focus is the video work *Revelation*, created in 2024 during a residency at the German Academy Villa Massimo in Rome and shown for the first time in Berlin. It takes up motifs from the Book of Revelation and weaves them together in an almost suggestive and painterly manner with visual codes of the present.

Admission to the exhibition is free. The exhibition will be accompanied by an extensive program of events, including screenings and talks
