The striking zig-zag building by New York architect Daniel Libeskind is one of Berlin's best-known architectural works. To mark its 25th anniversary, the Jewish Museum Berlin is dedicating an exhibition to the building and the period in which it was built.

In the summer of 1989, Daniel Libeskind won the competition for the extension to the then Berlin Museum. His design went far beyond the original brief: it combined architecture and Berlin history in a new way and had a lasting impact on the public debate about remembrance, commemoration and memory in Germany.

The exhibition explores Libeskind’s conceptual work, his sources of inspiration, and his engagement with German—and particularly Jewish—cultural history in Berlin. Drawings, models, and contemporary writings trace the period leading up to and following the fall of the Berlin Wall, illustrating the creation of one of the most influential museum buildings of our time. The exhibits come from the JMB’s collection, supplemented by loans and donations from the architect.
