Andrej Holm, Michael Sontheimer – Porträtaufnahmen von Andrej Holm und Michael Sontheimer

Housing in East and West Berlin - a discussion with Andrej Holm and Michael Sontheimer, moderated by Marion Brasch.

The Wall cut through Berlin and with it life courses, neighborhoods, housing realities - in the East controlled by the state, in the West regulated by the market economy. Prefabricated housing against squatted houses, allocation against ownership: housing has always been highly political in Berlin.

The urban sociologist Andrej Holm and the journalist Michael Sontheimer have followed these developments closely: Holm as a critical voice of rental policy and urban research, Sontheimer as a chronicler of the West Berlin squatter scene and urban countercultures.

The conversation will focus on everyday life and ideology on both sides of the Wall. What did it mean to have a roof over your head in the divided city, what was it like after the Wall came down, and what is it like now?
