The Upheaval of 1989–90 and German Reunification: Mixed Feelings?

Guided Tour, Berlin Freedom Week

East Side Gallery

East Side Gallery

In 1990, the artists painted their messages for a united Europe on the Berlin Wall. Some drew inspiration for their artwork from their experiences in 1990. The more than one hundred works of art convey hope and joy, but also reflect the worries and unsettling experiences of the period of upheaval in 1989–90. During the guided tour, several works of art will be presented, and we’ll explore how the artists reflect on German reunification and the transformation more than 35 years after the fall of the Wall: What would they have painted on the Berlin Wall today? Are the messages still relevant?

The guided tour will take place as part of Berlin Freedom Week 2026.Translated with DeepL
