In 1925, without an entrance exam or trial period, Oskar Moll accepted the very young Wilhelm Philipp into his studio in Breslau. Soon afterward, Wassily Kandinsky and Paul Klee helped shape his incredible talent at the Bauhaus in Dessau. The Nazis branded his body of work as “degenerate”: Disappointed, Philipp withdrew to Niederschönhausen, ran a studio for blueprints, and painted portraits of friends and colleagues. After 1945, Soviet cultural policy drove him into the American occupation zone. In Darmstadt, he became known as a painter-turned-taxi-driver.
