The mysterious Grottenberg was built for King Friedrich Wilhelm III and Queen Luise towards the end of the 18th century. A colorful pavilion in Far Eastern style crowned the hill, a grotto decorated with mirror glass, porcelain and shells and a seemingly sunken ancient temple completed the picturesque ensemble. After 1945, the unused site fell into disrepair. in 2013, archaeological excavations revealed surprisingly well-preserved parts of the grotto and temple ruins.
