The Invisible World in a Drop of Water: Diatoms, Biodiversity, and Time

Botanischer Garten

Diatoms are microscopic algae found in nearly every aquatic environment on Earth. Invisible to the naked eye, they play a crucial role in global ecosystems, producing a significant portion of the oxygen we breathe. At the same time, they are highly sensitive indicators of environmental change—tiny witnesses to the health of our waters.

Dr. Nelida Abarca will open the door to their fascinating world, combining scientific insight with visual exploration. A hands-on microscopy session will give participants the rare opportunity to observe these remarkable organisms up close.

The event also features a guided tour of the diatom collections at the Berlin Botanic Garden and Botanical Museum, including the renowned Friedrich Hustedt Collection. Assembled over more than a century, it offers a unique link between past discoveries and modern research.

By combining microscopy, science, and history, this experience invites you to uncover a hidden world—and see biodiversity from an entirely new perspective.
