Social commentary packaged for a broad audience, aired on Mother’s Day: “Die Unverbesserlichen” is a portrait, marked by gentle tragicomedy and a bitter undertone, of a family from what was then West Germany’s middle class with three children who are nearly or already adults, clearly set in Berlin. Inge Meysel adapted her leading role from the hugely successful play “Das Fenster zum Flur” to play a super-capable, know-it-all mother who wants to control her loved ones, prompting them to try to break free from her.
