Prince Wilhelm of Prussia (1906–1940) was regarded as a beacon of hope in monarchist circles after his grandfather and father had fled into exile following the end of the German Empire in 1918. The emperor’s eldest grandson was extremely popular. When he died in 1940 from a war wound, 50,000 people flocked to Potsdam for his funeral.
