The Berlin Sculpture Find

'Degenerate Art‘ in the Bomb Rubble

Führung zum "Berliner Skulpturenfund"

Führung zum "Berliner Skulpturenfund"

Brought together by fate and marked by abuse and destruction, the ‘Berlin Sculpture Find’ has become a globally recognised symbol that, more powerfully than many intact works of art, illustrates the persecution of modern art by the Nazi dictatorship.
But why were these works of classical modernism considered ‘degenerate art’? How were they displayed at the propaganda exhibition of the same name in Munich in 1937? Who were the artists? The guided tour sheds light on this history and the discovery of the sculptures during excavations in Berlin-Mitte in 2010. We get up close to the sculptures, see what can be repaired through restoration, but also how much has been lost in the bomb rubble.
