Queerness and Gender in Judaism - Tour & City Walk

Neue Synagoge Berlin

Neue Synagoge Berlin

Using examples from religious texts and modern conflicts within different Jewish groups, this tour explores the history of queerness and gender in Judaism. We will also look at the lives of queer Jews such as resistance fighter Herbert Budzislawski and social worker Hannah Karminski. Both lived, loved, and fought in the neighborhood of the New Synagogue.

On this tour we will visit the New Synagogue Berlin and the Spandauer Vorstadt, where we will discuss not only the traditional role of women in Judaism but also Jewish women like Regina Jonas. As the first female rabbi in history, Regina Jonas broke existing boundaries by fighting for her place as a Jewish spiritual leader.Translated with DeepL
