Women photographers have shaped the history of photography from the very beginning—yet for a long time they remained in the shadow of their male colleagues. This lecture examines the educational and career paths of women photographers from the 19th century through the Weimar Republic. It focuses on technical schools, studios, and networks that opened up new perspectives for women, as well as their diverse fields of activity spanning art, documentary photography, advertising, and photojournalism.
Lecture and discussion with historian Anne Pavlenko-Vitten. She wrote her dissertation on “Unwelcome Competitors: The Training of Female Photographers and Technical Assistants at the Berlin Lette Association’s School of Photography, 1890–1940”, is a co-founder of the interdisciplinary working group Foto:Diskurs, a appointed member of the DGPh, and works as a freelance historian specializing in the history of photography and gender history.
