New Frontiers in Biomedicine

Association for Biology, Life Sciences, and Biomedicine in Germany (VBIO), Gläsernes Labor, Berlin-Buch Campus

Breaking New Ground in BiomedicineWe are breaking new ground in biomedicine through interdisciplinary research. Techniques from chemistry and biology are combined and used to visualize cell structures via microscopy. This enables the localization of proteins relevant to various disease states and helps us better understand and track them.Microplastics are now found in our food and even in the brain. How do micro- and nanoplastics affect brain cells—and can they be broken down?Microplastics are literally everywhere—even in everything we eat. Recent studies show that tiny plastic particles can be found in many tissues of the body, including the brain. But what exactly happens when micro- and nanoplastics are exposed to neural tissue? How do they affect brain cells, and can they be broken down or removed?Researchers at the Max Delbrück Center for Molecular Medicine (MDC) are presenting their latest findings on how plastic particles interact with nerve cells. Using state-of-the-art microscopy and mini-brain models, they demonstrate how these particles penetrate cells, how they behave once inside, and what consequences this may have for cell function.Speaker:Paula Leupold, Max Delbrück Center for Molecular MedicineGeorg Braune, Charité – Universitätsmedizin BerlinFlorian Bartsch, Max Delbrück Center for Molecular Medicine The lecture series is open to everyone!Attendance at a lecture can count toward continuing education; we will provide you with a certificate of attendance upon request.Register at For more information, visit the Berlin Science Week 2026 event page.© Georg BrauneTranslated with DeepL
