Klara Heydebreck preserved many documents from her life and saved them through the turmoil of two wars. Armed with this legacy, Eberhard Fechner set out in 1969 to search for a person who was no longer alive. It was a process of tireless exploration: Fechner visits the apartment, examines the remnants, delves into the deceased’s payroll records, and in the process reconstructs the historical context and, above all, the life story of a courageous and lonely woman who neither wanted nor was able to submit to the conventional rules governing a woman’s life.
