Modeled after Moscow’s grand boulevards, Karl-Marx-Allee—with its nearly 3,000 apartments—tells the story of reconstruction in divided Berlin from a socialist perspective. This east-west thoroughfare illustrates, like few other streets in Berlin, the city’s eventful architectural history within the context of different political systems and ideologies. The tour begins at the twin towers at Frankfurter Tor and winds through the most famous section of Karl-Marx-Allee—the “pastry-shop-style” buildings between Proskauer Straße and Strausberger Platz. Passing the buildings designed by Hermann Henselmann and Ludmilla Herzenstein, Café Sibylle, and the former Kosmos cinema, the route ends in the so-called “2nd construction phase” at the Kino International.
