Guided Tour of the City with Ticket B
The walking tour takes you through the second construction phase of Karl-Marx-Allee and includes visits to the interiors of the Kino International and Café Moskau. This allows you to experience Josef Kaiser’s architecture in the very places where it remains an integral part of the city to this day.
Off into the future! It was under this premise that the second construction phase of Karl-Marx-Allee was built in the early 1960s. The city had moved away from the grandiose “national architectural style” of the early Stalinallee: it was too expensive, too labor-intensive to implement, and increasingly discredited politically. It was replaced by a new vision of architecture and the city—characterized by industrial construction, modern designs, and a new formal language. One of the architects who played a key role in shaping this transformation was Josef Kaiser. The Kino International and Café Moskau—both built according to his designs—are two of the most striking public buildings on Karl-Marx-Allee.
