Stained glass boasts a rich tradition spanning centuries, with countless methods and styles evolving over time. Among the most iconic and enduring is the Tiffany copper foil technique. In this course, you’ll dive deep into this fascinating process, learning step by step while creating your own work of art. All materials and glass are provided.
The workshop takes place Friday until Sunday, from 10:00am to 2:00pm. Class is taught in English, German, and Spanish.
Day 1
Exercise 1
We will begin by introducing the characteristics of the Tiffany technique and outlining all the steps required to create an object using this method. Sofia will also provide examples for reference.
For the first exercise, we’ll start with a simple project:
Cut two pieces of 2mm or 3mm float glass, each measuring 15x15 cm
Arrange dried flowers on one piece of glass to create a composition
Use suitable glue to secure the flowers in place
Place the second glass on top, sandwiching the flowers
Apply copper tape around the perimeter and solder the edges
Attach two eyelets and add a chain for hanging
Exercise 2
For the second project, we’ll create a more intricate two-dimensional object. This piece will involve either straight or curved cuts and incorporate glass of different colors, depending on individual preferences.
Sofia will provide a folder of designs for those who wish to use templates or seek inspiration. The final piece can be designed as a hanging ornament or structured with wire to resemble a decorative cane.
Day 2
We will continue working on Exercise 2, applying patina to the soldered areas to achieve a different finish from the first exercise.
Exercise 3
In this exercise, we will explore the unique possibilities of working in three dimensions by creating a simple cube. This will provide hands-on experience with the structural aspects of the Tiffany technique.
Day 3
We will continue with Exercise 3, refining our work and completing the final details.
