International Museum Day

Queerness and gender in Judaism - guided tour & city walk

Internationaler Museumstag

Internationaler Museumstag

Using examples from religious texts and modern conflicts within Jewish groups, we will look at the history of queerness in Judaism, among other things. We will also look at the lives of queer Jews such as resistance fighter Herbert Budzidzslawski and social worker Hannah Karminski. Both lived, loved and fought very close to our building.
The tour takes us through the New Synagogue Berlin and the surrounding area in the Spandauer Vorstadt district, where we not only look at the traditional role of women in Judaism, but also at Jewish women such as Regina Jonas. As the first female rabbi in world history, Regina Jonas not only fought for new scope for action but also broke down existing boundaries.
