Live Astronomy bridges the natural sciences and technology with philosophical and religious questions. It forges connections, opens up new perspectives, and enables a holistic view of the world. It has always pushed the boundaries of what is technologically feasible and what is scientifically and philosophically conceivable. To this day, astronomy therefore holds a special place in our cultural and scientific life.The lecture series “History of Astronomy” examines the questions that humanity has posed to the heavens since the earliest times. It shows what answers have been found over the centuries and what intellectual, scientific, and technical means made these discoveries possible. In doing so, the history of astronomy also becomes a history of human curiosity, our worldview, and our quest to understand the cosmos.The upcoming topics and dates are:October 2, 2026: “Gods, Tombs, and the Stars—Astronomy from the Stone Age to Mesopotamia”October 9, 2026: “The Closed Cosmos—Astronomy in Hellenic Culture until the Fall of Rome”October 16, 2026: “Sun, Deserts, and Stars—Astronomy in the Arab Empire”November 6, 2026: “Beliefs in the Stars and the Laws of the Stars—Astronomy in the European Middle Ages and the Renaissance”November 13, 2026: “The Shattered Cosmos – Astronomy After the Copernican Revolution”November 27, 2026: “Measuring the World—The Era of Classical Astronomy”December 4, 2026: “The Message of the Stars—From Classical Astronomy to Astrophysics”December 11, 2026: “Star, Model, and Reality – Astronomy of the 20th Century”Dr. Felix Lühning works in the education department of the Planetarium Berlin Foundation and is an expert on the history of astronomy. He earned his doctorate with a dissertation on the Gottorf Giant Globe and completed his habilitation with a thesis on the history of the Kiel University Observatory. In his spare time, he builds authentic replicas of historical astronomical instruments to use them in understanding the theory and practice of ancient observational techniques.
