Debates on Material Justice —in which the struggle over the social and economic significance of craftsmanship, materials, and artistic and design works plays out—emerged with early industrialization in Western Europe and culminated in the Modernist era with the German Werkbund, thereby decisively shaping the German concept of design.

Applying this to the present day and drawing on historical context, we will discuss the potential of digital craftsmanship for addressing material-related issues in terms of sustainability and social change.
We have invited three designers working at the intersection of materials, sustainability, and technology from the Department of Product Design and the greenlab at the Weißensee Academy of Art Berlin.
