The only piece of Chinese wallpaper preserved in the castle can be found in Prince Heinrich’s summer apartment. The wall decoration, originally painted on a white background with exotic birds and flowers, has suffered extensive damage since its installation in 1760, primarily due to sunlight streaming through the south-facing windows and the room’s varied uses over the years. Restoration took place in the 1990s, and the wallpaper was reinstalled in 2002. During this same period, the library also regained its wall decoration—a reconstruction of the first early-Classical paper wall decoration in Prussia, which had been preserved in fragments.

Let paper conservator Wiebke Müller tell you about the history of paper wallpaper, its diversity, and the unique aspects of its production and preservation.Translated with DeepL
