Every day we walk down streets without asking ourselves whose names we’re actually saying. Who were they? Why were they honored—and by whom? And why is the name still there?

Curator Tabea Thielmann guides visitors through the special exhibition Renaming?! Berlin’s Street Names and Their History and offers a glimpse beneath the surface: at the political decisions, the citizens’ initiatives, the lengthy debates, and the surprisingly swift resolutions that give rise to—or cause the disappearance of—street names. With a focus on the Mitte district, where East and West, continuity and rupture have left their mark on the city’s geography to this day.

The tour is part of the accompanying program for the exhibition, which runs through September 27, 2026, at the Mitte Museum.Translated with DeepL
