Lovis Corinth’s significance for modern art cannot be overstated. Even during his lifetime, the virtuoso painter (1858–1925) was one of the best-known and most influential figures in Berlin’s art scene. Born and raised in Tapiau, East Prussia, he moved from Munich to Berlin in 1900. At that time, the imperial capital was already significantly more progressive and vibrant than the Bavarian capital. “It all began in Berlin,” Corinth is said to have remarked about his success story along the Spree.
