Crystal-clear, printed as a single block

Chodowiecki in the DHM Collections
Using selected originals—single-sheet prints, copperplate engraving series, rare en bloc print sheets, and “book engravings”— — Dr. Wolfgang Cortjaens and the team from the Print Collection will present the German Historical Museum’s extensive Chodowiecki collection in four workshops, each lasting approximately 45 minutes.
The focus will be, on the one hand, on the graphic engraving and printing techniques that Chodowiecki employed to develop his distinctive, finely detailed style, and, on the other hand, on the refinement of production processes that ushered in a renaissance of printmaking in the second half of the 18th century. This was accompanied by a rise in the number of illustrated printed works—such as almanacs, novels, plays, and journals—to which Chodowiecki, as one of the leading copperplate engravers of his era, contributed striking illustrations in each case. In this age of fast-paced digital imagery, this event aims to invite visitors to encounter the original works, to look closely, and to “read the traces.”
Organizers: Dr. Wolfgang Cortjaens, Curator of Applied Art and Prints; Dr. Matthias Miller, Director of the Library and Curator of Manuscripts—Old and Rare Prints.
