In this open, drop-in comic workshop, children and adults can help solve a mystery through drawing: Researcher Dr. Aquarius is receiving messages from Mars using her water communication device. Something has happened there that needs to be pieced together. Under the artistic guidance of comic artists Francesca Sciarmella and Alexandra Ruppert, participants will create short comics to display and take home. Suitable for beginners.

PARTICIPANTS

Alexandra Ruppert

Alexandra Ruppert works as a graphic designer and illustrator in Berlin. She is part of a print and comics collective, produces her own comics and zines, and can regularly be found exhibiting at comic conventions. In her own publications, she enjoys exploring the frayed edges of reality—lucid dreams, fragmented memories, everyday magic, and extraterrestrial themes frequently feature in her work. As a workshop leader, she has taught visual storytelling in various formats at elementary schools, secondary schools, and universities.

Francesca Sciarmella

Following her studies in architecture and scenography, Francesca Sciarmella has continued to develop her practice as an illustrator and comic artist. Today, she works with museums and other cultural institutions on exhibitions and educational games that bridge the gap between analog and digital spaces. She is interested in how stories can be told through images, spaces, and interactive formats. She combines design concepts with playful and participatory approaches to create new ways of engaging with knowledge and culture—with comics serving as an important visual narrative format.

Dr. Aquarius

Prof. Dr. Ria Aquarius heads the “Extraterrestrial Research and Water Communications Laboratory”—or Extra-Terra Lab, for short—in Berlin. She is in contact with extraterrestrial partner universities in space, particularly the Alba Mons Institute on Mars, which is run by Martians. The post-distiller she designed herself uses water as a means of communication to translate messages between Mars and Earth. In her free time, she enjoys playing volleyball.
