Pieter Pietersz.’s early Northern Dutch group portrait of the Amsterdam publishing family Laurens Jacobsz. (c. 1590) combines Reformed piety with bourgeois self-representation. However, the scene depicted is not the family’s actual residence but an idealized setting for instruction, Bible reading, writing exercises, and exemplary homemaking.
Speakers: Dr. Stephan Kemperdick, Gemäldegalerie Berlin, and Prof. Dr. Johann Hinrich Claussen, Humboldt University of Berlin
