Charité Sunday Lecture: “Peritoneal Cancer: What Comprehensive Surgery Makes Possible Today”

In Sunday's lecture, Assistant Professor Dr. Şafak Gül explains how peritoneal metastases develop, what symptoms they cause, and what modern diagnostic and treatment options are available.

When cancer spreads within the abdominal cavity, the peritoneum may also be affected. So-called peritoneal carcinomatosis is usually not a cancer in its own right, but rather metastases from a tumor that originally developed, for example, in the intestine, stomach, ovaries, or pancreas. Peritoneal carcinomatosis represents an advanced stage of the disease and, until just a few years ago, was often considered virtually untreatable.

In the Sunday lecture, PD Dr. Şafak Gül from the Department of Surgery will explain how peritoneal metastases develop, what symptoms they cause, and what modern diagnostic and treatment options are available. She will also discuss who these specialized therapies are suitable for, what prospects they offer, and why treatment at an experienced interdisciplinary center can be crucial for therapeutic success.
