How is sound created from air?

When we hear a sound, air moves – just like waves in water. Imagine blowing into a flute or singing: when you do this, you set the air in motion. This air begins to vibrate. The vibrations travel through the air until they reach your ear, and your brain interprets them as a sound.

Johanne Braun will show you the role air plays in producing sounds – in your voice and in instruments such as the flute, oboe or organ. Together, you’ll try out how this works. And once the sound has reached your ear, the fascinating question arises: why do you prefer one sound over another? Find out!
