A Look at the Berlinische Galerie, Both in Front of and Behind the Scenes

The Berlinische Galerie is offering a new exhibition format that focuses on its extensive collection of prints: Works of art—especially prints—literally shape our “image of the city” across different eras. Artists are also witnesses of their time when they capture social changes with a pencil or etching needle.

The event with art historian Britta Bode combines three elements: It offers a glimpse into the detailed pencil drawings of multimedia artist Marc Brandenburg (*1965). This is followed by a tour of the newly curated permanent exhibition “Art in Berlin 1880–1980,” exploring the evolving depictions of the city in painting and photography. An exclusive visit to the Print Collection rounds out the afternoon: original prints from the storage collection will be on display. This is a rare opportunity to view drawings, watercolors, lithographs, and etchings—from artists such as Max Beckmann and Werner Heldt to Monika Meiser and Rainer Fetting—up close and to discuss them together: Berlin in Pictures—The Drawn City.
