Post-war modernism in Berlin: From the Temporary Bauhaus-Archiv to the Museum für Fotografie

Modernism has many faces: it ranges from far-reaching concepts such as the car-friendly city, through finely modelled, curved office buildings, to university buildings that symbolise a new beginning for society. In Charlottenburg, these ideas coalesce into a multi-layered picture of post-war modernism, spanning the TU campus, City West and cultural institutions.

Our guided tour takes you through post-war Berlin, from Ernst-Reuter-Platz to the Gedächtniskirche.

The starting point is the Temporary Bauhaus-Archiv in Haus Hardenberg, a bold 1950s design by Paul Schwebes. From there, the walk takes you past the concert hall of the Berlin University of the Arts to the Museum of Photography. Here, as part of the special exhibition "New Woman, New Vision. Women Photographers of the Bauhaus", the Bauhaus-Archiv is showcasing works by female Bauhaus artists, which are placed in dialogue with contemporary artistic positions.
