AULAB: What Kind of Freedom Does Art Need?

Leon Locher and Detlev Schneider, artists from two different generations, will speak with Rose Beermann this afternoon about what kind of freedom is necessary for artistic work. Starting from concrete spatial conditions - such as living, working, and performance spaces - we will discuss conceptions of freedom: What conditions do we perceive as freedom at certain moments - and why? What restrictions existed 20 years ago, and what restrictions exist today? To what extent do these restrictions hinder artistic work, and to what extent might they even prove productive? At a time when artists and cultural workers in Berlin are under enormous pressure due to drastic budget cuts and the radical questioning of art's sociopolitical significance, the focus is on learning from one another: How can we work within limits and create spaces of freedom? The audience is invited to contribute and participate in the discussion.
