In this Artist Talk, curator Boaz Levin speaks with Carrie Mae Weems about key questions that have shaped her artistic practice over more than four decades. Drawing on photographs, videos, and installations from her exhibition The Heart of the Matter, they discuss how images write history, shape memory, and influence societal perspectives. Their conversation focuses on the power of representation and the significance of places as sites of power and memory—from private interiors to institutions, monuments, and landscapes inscribed with history. The talk offers insights into Weems’ poetic yet political visual language and the artistic strategies she uses to create visibility, challenge established narratives, and connect personal experience with collective memory.

Carrie Mae Weems (b. 1953, Portland, Oregon, USA ) is a widely influential artist whose work challenges mainstream viewpoints of history. Over the course of forty years, she has built an acclaimed body of work using photographs, text, fabric, audio, digital images, installation, and video. She has received numerous awards, including a MacArthur Foundation Fellowship, the US Department of State Medal of Arts, the National Medal of Arts, the Joseph H. Hazen Rome Prize Fellowship from the American Academy in Rome, and the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation’s Lifetime Achievement Award. Her work is in collections worldwide, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; Museum of Modern Art, New York; Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; and Tate Modern, London.
