In 2024, communication designer Jan-Erik Nord drove a Trabant along Route 66 as part of a charity campaign for a seriously ill child. He had been dreaming of taking a road trip across the U.S. for years. Now, that dream had become a reality in an East German classic car. But first, the Trabant 601—which had been languishing in a barn for 25 years—needed some serious work: the engine block had a crack, the transmission was out of oil, and the brakes were rusted solid. Shipped to the U.S., it then traveled more than 9,000 kilometers crisscrossing the United States, and the adventure began...
