For her debut play 16GB: Tischtennisplattenpolitik (Table Tennis Politics), Zehra Sönmez received Berlin’s playwriting award for young audiences. Written in poetic yet precise language, the play explores public space, coexistence and the politics of everyday places. This staged reading presents selected excerpts from the text. 

Situated between the panel on growing up in Kreuzberg and its artistic representation – including in film – and the parallel table tennis tournament with Kreuzberg youth centres, 16GB: Tischtennisplattenpolitik unfolds its own space of resonance. At the heart of the play are the siblings Andaç and Ceren, who receive a 16 GB memory card as a graduation gift and are asked to make a film. From this premise, Zehra Sönmez develops a text about memory, family, visibility, and social participation. The table tennis table becomes a symbol of public space – a place where encounters, conflict, and community take shape. This staged reading presents selected excerpts from the award-winning debut by the author, which will premiere at Theater an der Parkaue in November 2026.
