The artist Gerhard Richter (born 9 February 1932 in Dresden) has permanently donated over 100 works to the Neue Nationalgalerie. The works reflect the great diversity of his artistic oeuvre, from paintings created using traditional techniques with brushes or squeegees to completely different forms of design.In addition to canvas and paint, Gerhard Richter has always used other materials and techniques from the outset. For example, he used photographs as models for motifs or painted over them himself with paint. The transparent surface reflects the world as if in awindow. Depending on the installation, format or colouring, this results inentirely unique visual worlds.
The centrepiece of the current exhibition is the installation ‘6 Standing Panes’ (2002/2011). The towering glass panes create an exciting interplay between transparency and reflection, challenging us to re-experience our own position in the space. The work is constantly changing due to light, movement and perspective. It invites us to further reflect on the relationship between visibility and reality
