With its traditional winter tour, the Grand Classic Ballet brings this world-famous classic back to the stage. There, something happens that cannot be scrolled past, clicked on or skipped. Music, movement and emotion come to life right before the audience’s eyes. For one evening, everything else fades into the background.

Of Curses, Princes and Swans

Prince Siegfried is to choose a bride at a festive ball. Yet none of the young women captures his heart. After the ball, he finds himself by a mysterious lake. There he meets Odette, who has been transformed into a swan by the sorcerer Rotbart. Only at night is she allowed to take on her human form. True love could break the curse. Siegfried promises Odette his loyalty. But Rotbart sends his daughter Odile, who bears a striking resemblance to the swan princess. Siegfried falls for the deception. When he realises what has happened, he must fight for his love and for Odette’s freedom. What sounds like a fairy tale tells of deeply human emotions. It is a story of trust and betrayal, of hope and disappointment, and of the question of just how strong love can be when everything seems to be against it.


The beauty of precision

The Swan Ensemble is one of the most famous scenes in the world of theatre. When the dancers move seemingly weightlessly and in perfect harmony, an almost unreal beauty emerges. Behind this lightness, however, lie the utmost concentration, years of training and absolute control over the body. Particularly fascinating is the dual role of Odette and Odile. One is delicate, vulnerable and filled with quiet longing. The other appears self-assured, seductive and dangerous. The transition between the white and black swans demands not only technical brilliance but also great dramatic power. Tchaikovsky’s music gives voice to these emotions. Even the very first bars of the famous swan theme conjure up a mysterious world. Gentle melodies give way to dramatic outbursts; romantic hope to dark forebodings. Even those who have never seen ‘Swan Lake’ in its entirety will recognise many of its melodies.
