The intercultural dance ensemble comprises 13 performers aged between 8 and 18 with intellectual disabilities. Created under the theme (E)motion, the piece reflects the dancers’ individual emotional experiences and personal worlds, exploring fear, anger, ‘perceived AI’ (the intelligence of an AI as perceived by users), emotional turmoil, falling in love and the happyness of being together.

Production and Ensemble

Herzhaft romantisch was created as part of the annual inclusive dance festival Neukölln tanzt!, held under the theme “(E)motion”. The piece reflects the dancers’ individual emotional experiences and personal worlds, exploring fear, anger, perceived artificial intelligence, emotional turmoil, falling in love, and the happiness of being together.

Our work combines elements of contemporary dance and performance theatre through both individual and collective creative processes. Each movement-based performance is devised collaboratively and therefore always incorporates biographical influences. The students perform as experts in their own lived experience. Empowerment lies at the heart of our artistic practice, with cultural participation for EVERYONE as a central principle.

The original music for the choreographies was electronically composed and produced by students in the graduating class of the Gustav Meyer Special Educational Support Centre. In the final scene of our piece, Gemeinsam glücklich (Happy Together), the composers themselves also join the dancers on stage, becoming part of the performance.

The intercultural dance ensemble Neukölln 11 comprises 13 children and young people aged 8 to 18 with intellectual disabilities. Founded in 2009 as an extracurricular dance theatre group bringing together students from different classes, the ensemble has been creating work together ever since.

Since 2016, the group has worked within inclusive dance and theatre contexts, collaborating on projects with partners including the Maxim Gorki Theatre, TUSCH Berlin, and the Goethe-Instituts in Turin and Marseille.
