When Rag Doll was founded in 2012, singer Käthe von T. and pianist Amy Protscher agreed: Bessie Smith was the reason they had dedicated themselves to the 1920s and its music with Rag Doll. Inspired by the emotional exuberance and the raw but honest humor of the “Empress of the Blues,” Bessie Smith, and her contemporaries—from Ma Rainey and Ethel Waters to Alberta Hunter—the Berlin-based musicians are always happy to be transported back to this golden age of music and its stories.
Joining them is Tanja Becker, whose fiery virtuosity on the trombone completes the lineup of the classic Bessie Smith Trio. Together, the three Berlin-based musicians captivate their audience body, soul, and heart, taking them on a journey to the golden age of ragtime, boogie-woogie, Harlem stride, and barrelhouse. The spark ignites immediately, and they transform every stage into a magnificent old juke joint in the American South of the 1920s. And as is customary in places like these: you’re welcome to listen, swing, and dance until the air is electric. Welcome to the Roaring Twenties!
