Fantasy and Farewell: Works by Vaughan Williams, Parry, Elgar, and Marsh

"The incredible thing about art is that it can be a prism for our thoughts and ideas, through which we can access a deeper meaning beyond ourselves," says composer Joanna Marsh. "Music can surround you with a marvellous multidimensional sculpture of sound that overwhelms and shrinks to a dot on the horizon the next moment. The mutable physicality of music is the most remarkable quality for me."

The RIAS Kammerchor and Ensemble Resonanz, conducted by Justin Doyle, present the world premiere of Threadlands, a commissioned work for choir and string instruments that revolves around the themes of birth, new beginnings and hope.

But hope can also go hand in hand with sadness. In the midst of the horrors of the First World War, Hubert Parry wrote his Songs of Farewell as resounding epitaphs for fallen pupils and friends: moving testimonies of ethereal beauty between deep pain, confidence and the hope of peace and redemption.
