Quatuor Zaïde

Streichquartett im Kleinen Saal

Quatuor Zaïde

Quatuor Zaïde

The title heroine of an unfinished singspiel by Mozart is their namesake: four female students at the Paris Conservatory founded the Quatuor Zaïde in 2009. The violist and cellist are still part of the ensemble today. The programme of the four “Zaïdes” includes two works by our Composer in Residence Bryce Dessner, one of which, “Aheym,” is dedicated to his grandmother and was written for the Kronos Quartet in 2013. Two long-neglected female composers also come into their own when “Poem” by British composer and violist Rebecca Clarke (1886–1979) and the string quartet by Fanny Hensel (1805–1842) are performed. The concert literally ends on a classical note with the fourth of the six early string quartets written by Ludwig van Beethoven around the age of 30.
