Three distinguished South African artists with vastly different musical backgrounds come together to create a special concert project blending composition and improvisation that will have its premiere at the Pierre Boulez Saal. Pianist and composer Kathleen Tagg is a pioneer of what she calls a “piano orchestra”; violist Gareth Lubbe is also an overtone singer; and Dizu Plaatjies is one of the leading experts on South African musical traditions. Together they explore connections between European string instruments, xhosa mouth bows, ancient musical practices, and contemporary sound worlds.
